Shrimp strain origin and breeder provenance survey

Shrimp researchEvidence under review

Scope: ornamental Neocaridina and Caridina strains, hybrids, selected morphs, and high-value wild species/forms commonly sold in the dwarf-shrimp hobby.

Evidence rules

1. Wild taxon origin — where the biological species/population occurs in nature.

2. Captive strain origin — country/region where the named aquarium strain was created or stabilized.

3. Original breeder attribution — only recorded as fact when a breeder, breeder organization, government source, academic source, or strong contemporary history supports it.

Neocaridina inventory

Unless noted otherwise, the underlying wild taxon is Neocaridina davidi or an aquarium line sold under that name. A named captive color strain does not occur in the wild.

Common web “family trees” are useful as breeding hypotheses but are not equivalent to pedigree records. Blue Dream, Blue Velvet, Bloody Mary, Chocolate, Black Rose, Carbon Rili, and several yellow/orange lines have contradictory ancestry diagrams. Aquapedia should store those diagrams as competing lineage claims, not flatten them into one canonical pedigree.

Key conflicts and open research targets

1. Taiwan Bee first breeder identity: strong contemporary sources establish Taiwan and a spontaneous mutation in a Red Bee breeder’s tanks, but do not safely name the first breeder. Several later web pages give names without primary evidence. Keep unknown/disputed.

2. Neocaridina early red/yellow/blue founders: Taiwan has strong historical importance and named early breeders, but exact Cherry → Sakura → Fire → Painted Fire and yellow/blue founder mapping is poorly archived.

3. Blue Dream genealogy: at least two commonly circulated family trees conflict. Store both claims before promoting any pedigree.

Research disposition

This is a provenance baseline, not a claim that ornamental-shrimp naming has a closed vocabulary. New strains are released continually, and many older founder records were never published in durable sources. Aquapedia should add new records only when the strain can be distinguished from a grade, reseller label, or renamed existing line, and should preserve the date and strength of the attribution rather than laundering hobby consensus into certainty.
